PS5: an update on console sales as of June 30, 2022, a somewhat disappointing quarter for SIE

If we are still in total vagueness on the sales side of the Xbox Series X and S, those of the PlayStation 5 are regularly communicated, and de facto scrutinized closely. We knew that Sony Interactive Entertainment was at 19.3 million consoles next gen sold as of March 31, 2022 and that the 20 million mark had since been exceeded.

The manufacturer has just unveiled its financial statement for the first quarter of its fiscal year 2022an opportunity to take stock of the results achieved between April 1 and June 30. 2.4 million PS5s have been sold over this period, 0.1 million more than in the same quarter in 2021, bringing total units sold at 21.7 million.

If the PlayStation 5 is on a good dynamic, this is no longer the case for its games. Where 63.6 million copies had been sold between April and June 2021, only 47.1 million copies found takers over these 3 months in 2022, the fault of a weaker catalogue. The number of subscribers to Playstation Plus is it at 47.3 million, 1 million more than on June 30, 2021, but 100,000 less than on March 31, 2022. Add to that production costs first party up, the division’s turnover Game & Network Services which fell by 11.7% to 604.1 billion yen (about 4.44 billion euros) compared to last year and profits which fell by 30.5% to 52.8 billion yen (about 390 million euros).

So it’s not the best time to Sony Interactive Entertainment, which has revised its objectives downwards for the current year, but no crisis in sight either. Let’s hope that sales of PlayStation 5 and games in the coming months manage to raise the bar.
