PS5 jailbreak is here: You can do that with it in the future

The older PlayStation models already have jailbreaks that allow you to install emulators, mods, and more. Until now, the PlayStation 5 has been outside, but now a developer has thrown open the gates for the first time.

PS5: First jailbreak available for the console

On the PlayStation 5 you can normally Only install games and apps that are officially offered by Sony. In this way, the system ensures that no unauthorized or illegal content can be played on the console. However, that could change soon, because a developer has created a first jailbreak – so far, however, this has worked rather poorly than well (source: Wololo).

Jailbreaks can be used to install emulators, homebrew games, mods, and special themes on consoles. With older consoles like the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation 4, the use is no longer uncommon – however, the PlayStation 5 apparently did not offer any security gaps – at least for a while.

A developer called “SpecterDev” managed to find a kernel exploit. The PS5 can read and write any data. Furthermore, this jailbreak can be used to view debug settings and guarantee full root access to the system. There’s a catch here though, because the whole thing only works with older firmware versions up to 4.03because a security hole in Apple’s WebKit was exploited there, but has since been closed.

Also, using the current version of the jailbreak does not allow running code. This eventually leads to a kernel panic and causing the console to crash. We therefore do not recommend you to try it yourself with your console. You can see the jailbreak in action in a video:

PlayStation 5: The look has changed a lot

Did you know that the first PS5 looked very different than today? One of the so-called dev kits that developers used to adapt their games to the new console recently fell into the hands of a tech YouTuber. He took a close look at the device.
