PS5 shortage: console crisis hits Sony hard

The console crisis is growing into a real problem for Sony. The production of the PS5 is still in a bind and as a result sales are falling well short of expectations.

Since the official launch, the PS5 has not been available in free trade for a longer period of time. the Semiconductor shortages and logistics problems have increasingly put obstacles in the way of the latest PlayStation – for Sony this is evident in the sales figures, which fall far short of the desired target.

PS5: Console crisis hits Sony hard

In the financial report for the fourth quarter of the fiscal year 2021/2022, Sony announced that the sales target for the PS5 had been missed – by a whopping 3.3 million copies. Sony had originally aimed for the period from April 2021 to the end of March 2022 a total of 14.8 million consoles for sale. Instead, however, the company only shipped 11.5 million PS5 consoles. Missing the sales target of 3 million should have caused disillusionment at Sony. But at least it is the console crisis as the reason for the defeat clearly recognizable. Demand for the hardware hasn’t diminished in the end, but the production and supply issues simply haven’t been able to produce enough console copies. Unfortunately, there is no improvement in sight in this regard – Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger recently stated that the crisis will probably last until 2024.

Xbox in the fast lane

While the PS5 has missed its own sales targets, Xbox has emerged as the beneficiary of the console crisis in recent months. Although the Xbox Series X is also extremely rare in stores, it has Microsoft’s approach with the Xbox Series S paid off. The new Xbox generation pushed ahead of the PS5 in terms of console sales revenue in the first quarter of 2022.
