Sony is launching the PS5 in an improved version. Two “slim” models and a separate Blu-ray drive appear. The new console is that thin.
Sony fans have been waiting for this for a long time. The Japanese manufacturer is now officially announcing a new model of the current PS5 console in the PlayStation.Blog. This is the more compact model known online as “PS5 Slim”. According to Sony’s own information, it has managed to make the console over 30 percent slimmer and 18 or 24 percent lighter – depending on which model you are looking at.
Sony is again offering the new, thinner model in a version with a drive and in a version without a drive (Digital Edition). Expressed in absolute numbers, it looks like this: The weight of the disc version has been reduced to 3.2 kilograms. This makes the model another 700 grams lighter than the revision CFI-12xxA.
Up to 800 grams lighter
With the Digital Edition the weight difference is even 800 grams. In the Slim Edition it only weighs 2.6 kilograms. The dimensions drop from 390 x 104 x 260 millimeters (mm) to 358 × 96 × 216 mm or, for the Digital Edition, from 390 x 92 x 260 mm to 358 × 80 × 216 mm.
Technically, almost everything remains the same with the Disc Edition, only the internal memory is increased from 825 GB to 1 terabyte. The same applies to the new Digital Edition. It can now also be subsequently expanded to include an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive.
You can take a look at the two new consoles in the following video.
Prices and availability
The new PS5 will be available in the USA from November and will then appear in other countries in the coming months. In this country you may have to wait until 2024 before you can hold the thin PlayStation in your hands. The prices remain unchanged.
The Digital Edition starts at 449.99 euros, the upgradeable Blu-ray drive costs 119.99 euros. The PS5 with an integrated drive costs 549.99 euros. Both models come with a holder that allows the PS5 to be placed horizontally. A stand for vertical installation costs 29.99 euros and is sold separately.
New PS5 standard models
The new PS5 models are lighter, they are, in a sense, “slim” models.
According to Sony, production of the “old” PS5 will be discontinued, where you can still get one cheaply, our PS5 insider tells you.
