PS5: support for 1440p and folders in the program of the next update

As explained on the PlayStation Blog by Hideaki Nishino, the grand master of user experience at PlayStation, it is from today that certain users selected by email will be able to test the features of this update before its official deployment. Note that participants will be called to the United States, Canada, Japan, United Kingdom, Germany and France only.

It will still be necessary to have a television or a PC screen compatible with 1440p to test this new intermediate display, provided of course that the game supports this definition. If the game features a higher native resolution, such as 4K, the user benefits from improved anti-aliasing by upsampling to 1440p output. To find out if your screen is 1440p compatible, simply do the test in the PS5 settings (Screen and video menu). Note: Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) on PS5 supports 1080p and 4K video output, but not 1440p resolution.

The other big new feature of the update is the ability to create folders (or lists, as Sony uses the term) to organize its games, a feature that comes in handy given the number of games that subscribers PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium can be tempted to download without restraint. To create a folder, you must first access the “Your collection” tab, then select “Create a list of games”. Then just choose the games concerned and name the folder. User can create maximum 15 folders and each folder can collect up to 100 games. This may seem overkill given the console’s storage limitations, except that streaming games can also be stored in folders.

Other new features in the update include the ability to compare 3D audio and stereo audio from the same screen, easier access to ongoing activities, and some new social features (request screen sharing, view profile a new friend, send messages and stickers in the Game Base). Everything is explained and illustrated in the PlayStation Blog article.
