PS5 UPDATE: a community help feature presented, something to overshadow videographers?

A little earlier in the month, the PS5 was entitled to a new firmware bringing some new features that are not particularly interesting. We now discover a future feature that will be implemented this year and will extend theGame help already included by involving players who wish to do so, who won’t have much to do except play. In this way, sequences of gameplay will be generated when carrying out specific actions. Good, obviously, it will only be video content, which poses a serious problem in our eyes. Indeed, without additional textual or audio explanations, this will greatly limit the interest, not to mention the fact that the capture will be carried out automatically, therefore without the real desire to make any kind of tutorial in the first place. Moreover, it is said that a moderator will be responsible for approving the content. Is this not a waste of resources for SIE while players will undoubtedly be quicker to take their smartphone and go see the work of a videographer on Youtube which will undoubtedly be more specific, not to mention the possibility of leaving questions in comments. Meanwhile, employing this same moderator to produce help videos himself would undoubtedly be simpler… And what about crediting the players whose clips will be selected?

This is Sabrina Meditz, working at Sony Interactive Entertainment inasmuch as Senior Director, Product Management, Platform Experiencewho presented this future addition on the PlayStation Blogusing the game Granblue Fantasy: Relink for example. Hopefully this flies higher at launch, as a help video for talking to NPCs isn’t going to be of much interest to us.

When PS5 launched in 2020, we offered Game Support. This feature offers players easy access, directly from their game, to advice, tips or videos helping them progress in a level, obtain a Trophy or even find a coveted item well hidden.

We continue to evolve the experience on PS5 console. Today we are excited to announce a new improvement to Game Help that will be available this year: Community Game Help. The Community Game Help will complement the Game Help as we currently know it by enriching the library of useful tips with videos automatically generated from gameplay videos of players who have chosen to contribute.

When the enhanced Game Aid with community content is released, Game Support will be available to all PS5 players, whether or not they are a PlayStation Plus subscriber. In compatible games, PS5 players will be able to suggest their gameplay, consult advice from other players or access advice from developers. Game developers will also be able to continue creating their own videos, as is already the case for popular titles like The Last of Us Part II Remastered or Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

Let’s take a closer look at how Community Play Support will look.

How to access Community Game Help

If you’re already familiar with Game Help, Community Game Help is a pretty similar experience. If you’re in a sticky situation and need help, press the PS key to open the Control Center and look for an action card displaying the “Hints” icon.

In addition to the developer-created tips already provided for compatible games, you’ll start to see tips labeled “Community Game Help” which will indicate that the clip was generated from other players’ gameplay footage. You can also rate the usefulness of these tips, which will allow us to refine our selection of content available to players.

Once the settings are enabled, your PS5 will automatically capture video when you perform a specific activity in a game. The video will then be reviewed by a moderator and, if approved, will be posted as a Game Help tip. PlayStation players will be able to view it, be inspired by it and evaluate it. Your videos will be deleted from your PS5 console once they have been uploaded to our servers. They won’t take up your console storage space.

Once your video is published, you will receive a system notification on your PS5 console.

This process will be automatic. You won’t need to edit or upload your clips to submit them. Only raw images will be published. Images and audio from your webcam, microphone, or Party chat will not be shared with the moderator or the community. Depending on the game you’re playing, your video may include online IDs or chat messages appearing on your game screen.

You can view or delete your published videos at any time from the settings menu.
