Psychedelic metroidvania Ultros will be released on February 13, 2024

Behind Ultros, we find Swedish artist El Huervo, whose distinctive style oozes from every pore of metroidvania. The plot isn’t much more conventional. Ouji, the protagonist, finds herself trapped in the mysterious Sarcophagus, a “giant, cosmic uterus drifting” to “unsuspected depths“. Its innards alter the course of life and death to weave a strange psychedelic tapestry.

Eh, but did the developers smoke or what? Haha

The opportunity to see some gameplay on video. Ultros proves that its visual density still allows you to get your bearings generally, with a rather dynamic action formula against various monsters, between the mollusk and the swordsman. The official press release mentions a mechanism “absorption” not yet very clear used to unlock new abilities.

A Deluxe Edition is planned for enthusiasts, including a digital artbook listing El Huervo’s sketches and a soundtrack cataloging the compositions of Oscar ‘Ratvader’ Rydelius, among “Peruvian instruments and orchestral themes“. Nothing contradictory a priori. PS5 players will be spoiled with an exclusive physical deluxe version published by Maximum Games (like their colleague Pacific Drive). In addition to digital goodies, console users will be able to glean three artistic cards and a magnet of Ouji.

Ultros will be released on February 13 on PC, PS4 and PS5 at the base price of €24.99. That said, pre-orders are already open with a 10% discount until February 20 (€22.49). If you are looking for a gift for Valentine’s Day, but you prefer originality to the traditional bouquet of roses…
