Most of us had at least one favorite Disney film as a child – and let’s be honest, we still have one today. My personal favorites are “Beauty and the Beast” and “Aladdin.” In my generation, “The Lion King” is also very popular. What exactly was it about the cartoons that fascinated us so much? The romantic love stories? The clear division into good and evil? The knowledge that everything will definitely turn out for the better at the end of the story?
The characters certainly play a large part in the success of Disney films. Even if from today’s perspective they are usually a little similar (the heroes are more or less out of line and just don’t want what everyone wants or what their social status dictates); the villains try to get the heroes to do it , giving them the field or doing something that benefits them; the heroes’ sidekicks – often cute animals – are funny and always loyal), they inspired us.
Disney characters: long overdue change
And while the early Disney works consolidated very classic role models and sometimes racist prejudices, the more modern protagonists stand more on their own – and no longer necessarily correspond to outdated ideas of what a beautiful and well-behaved woman or a strong man should look like . “The Little Mermaid” is black in a current remake, and a short film from 2022 about a ballet dancer deals with the topic of body positivity and campaigns against prejudice.
But even if we definitely don’t like everything about the old Disney films, the characters in them have accompanied us for a large part of our lives.
