When we are happy, life is simply more beautiful. We are more creative, more open to the people around us, and more resistant to problems and conflicts. If, on the other hand, we are unhappy – one wrong look is enough to lead our thoughts astray all day …

But can we do something to be happy and dance through life as often as possible instead of struggling through? Or is luck pure luck? Fortunately, we can even do a lot to give our positive energy a boost!

And in this case, for once, there is no talk of tedious things like learning self-love, overcoming loneliness or training emotional intelligence (although sooner or later there is of course no way around it …). We have three clever tricks picked out how you can positively influence your mood and become immediately happier. The best thing about it: You can use them every day, they don’t cost you two minutes and are super easy!

3 everyday rules for a happier life

1. The “It’ll be fine” rule

Tuesday morning, the alarm goes off, you lie in bed and are far from ready to get up. Same shit, every day! But then apply the “it will be fine” rule: Think of three specific things to look forward to. That could be the delicious poke bowl during the lunch break, the movie date with your girlfriend or your next vacation. It doesn’t matter whether the events take place on the same day or in the near future, the main thing is that your heart does a little skip when you think about it, and you are sure: It will be really nice! You will think of these three things over and over again throughout the day – and you will be amazed at how your mood changes as a result …

2. The 2-minute rule

The 2-minute rule serves to increase productivity in the narrower sense and is intended to help keep life more orderly. It says: “Do anything that takes less than two minutes right away!” Examples would be sorting / throwing mail, washing a coffee cup, answering simple e-mails, putting clothes away instead of throwing them on the chair, etc. – you probably have some little things that you often put off.

The great thing: if you stick to the 2-minute rule and take care of these little things immediately, you benefit twice over. You feel happy and “successful” because you have done something. And you avoid the little things from accumulating and at some point really annoying you, because dealing with them then – in total – costs you significantly more time.

3. The “just thank you” rule

When we are grateful for something, our body increasingly produces the messenger substances dopamine and serotonin – and these brighten our mood. Well, you might say now, when you have something to be grateful for. But you won’t get away with it that easily. In a newer University of Indiana study Psychologists found out that the feeling of gratitude can be assigned to a very specific region of the brain – which, in short, can be trained similarly to a muscle. In other words, gratitude can be practiced!

Hence the “just thank you” rule: Take you every day Take a moment to think about three things for which you are grateful that day (For example, on the way home in the evening or on your last visit to the bathroom before going to bed). It could be your hairstyle that looked great today, the dear colleague who noticed that you were not feeling well, or something general like your beautiful home. This not only gives you a little moment of happiness, but also trains your eye for the positive – and in the very big ideal case this even turns into deep and long-term satisfaction over time.
