Electricity consumption linked to public lighting recorded a “historic” drop of 20% during the first half of December between midnight and 4 a.m., the manager of the electricity distribution network Enedis said on Tuesday.

“During the first 15 days of December 2022, Enedis notes a historic drop of 20% in the consumption of public lighting,” the firm said in a press release.

This drop was recorded in “heart of the night”, between midnight and 4:00 a.m., compared to the same period in 2021, further specifies Enedis, which underlines “a significant drop, the largest recorded” by the manager.

According to Enedis, public lighting is responsible for more than 40% of the annual electricity consumption of French municipalities, “with 11 million light points throughout the country, i.e. a power demand of 1,300 megawatts”.

At the end of November, the government had announced that it would send a circular to the prefects to anticipate and prepare their departments for any scheduled power cuts, which could affect 60% of the population but no critical site or priority customer.
