Public tasting – Switzerland’s most popular paprika chips – Kassenrutsch Espresso

From “crispy”, “spicy” to “oily” and “rancid” – the Kassenrutsch audience tastes big differences. The top places are occupied by cheap private labels from major distributors; the most expensive product in the test cannot keep up.

The shelves in the supermarkets are full of chips in a variety of flavors. Paprika chips are still the most popular in Switzerland.

For Kassenrutsch, passers-by taste nine of the best-selling pepper chips in the Glattzentrum in Wallisellen and record their observations in a questionnaire.

The expensive chips from Globus fail

The test subjects agree: the Delicatessa chips “Pimenton de la Vera DO” from Globus fail in all age groups. “Crispy”, but “unpleasant smell”, “too oily”, “foreign taste” are the most common mentions in the evaluation forms.

The overall grade of 2.5 is by far the lowest in the test. At Fr. 4.60 per 100g, the chips made in Spain cost more than four times as much as most of the chips tested.

Aldi and Prix Garantie are the most popular

The test subjects liked the pepper chips “Snack Fun” from Aldi and “Prix Garantie” from Coop, both made in Austria, the best. You achieve an overall grade of 5.4.

Both are notable for their “good seasoning” and “good chip thickness”. Those testing also appreciate the crispiness. At Fr. 1.02 or 1.03 per 100g, they are among the cheapest chips in the test.

Doubts in midfield

The “Paprika Original Chips” from Doubt received, just like the half-as-priced “Snack Day” from Lidl (made in the EU), the third best overall grade in the test with a 5.0. In addition to the test winners, the Swiss pepper chips from “M-Classic” from Migros are also just ahead with an overall rating of 5.1.

Little pepper at Denner and M-Budget

Two other chips in the test are made in Switzerland: Denner’s own brand with an overall grade of 4.5 and “M-Budget” from Migros with an overall grade of 4.7. The test subjects complained about both “not enough paprika flavor” and “pale”.

However, “M-Budget” scores with the “potato taste”. The test subjects criticized Tyrrell’s “Smoked Paprika” from England as “too hard”, but emphasized the “good spiciness”. That’s enough for the almost good overall grade of 4.8.
