(Reuters) – President Vladimir Putin on Monday signed an executive order granting Russian citizenship to Edward Snowden, the former U.S. NSA employee turned whistleblower.

Edward Snowden, 39, fled the United States after releasing confidential documents in 2013 revealing the extent of NSA surveillance operations, and was granted political asylum in Russia.

The American authorities have tried for several years to obtain his extradition to try him for espionage.
