(Reuters) – Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend the state funeral of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the Kremlin said on Monday.

“No, (Vladimir) Putin has no plans to travel to Japan and attend the funeral,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, adding that Russia had no yet decided on the presence of the country at the funeral.

The Japanese government has notified all countries with which it has diplomatic relations, including Russia, of the state funeral of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihiko Isozaki said Monday.

Japanese daily Sankei reported on Saturday that Tokyo is considering not allowing Vladimir Putin to attend the funeral, scheduled for September 27. Shinzo Abe was shot dead during a campaign rally this month.
