RNothing is worse for a strong man than to look weak. Vladimir Putin installed his power by projecting the image of a muscular, resolute, efficient leader. By standing up to America, he was going to be the one to put Russia back on the map of the powers that matter in the world. By invading Ukraine, he was going to expose the weakness of the West and enslave a neighbor who dared to embark on a democratic and pro-European path. But nothing goes as planned in this war and since September, the examples showing in broad daylight the new fragility of the tsar multiply.

He raises the specter of nuclear weapons, in vain; he claims to annex territories, but his army is each day obliged to withdraw from them a little more; he orders the mobilization…
