The 2022 World Cup is finally starting! The anticipation of the tournament is great, especially among children. The World Cup in Qatar is also criticized for very different reasons. Three examples with which you can counter children’s questions.
1. Qatar and football – That doesn’t go together
Football is not really popular in Qatar. The assumption is that Qatar is only hosting the games because the country can earn a lot of money with the 2022 World Cup.
Qatar is way too hot in the summer months. That’s why the games are only now taking place in winter – during which temperatures are still very high.
Many stadiums that were built especially for the 2022 World Cup will no longer be used after the tournament – and will therefore be dismantled again.
2. Dealing with the workers
Many new hotels, stadiums and roads were built in Qatar especially for the 2022 World Cup.
Many people from other countries worked on the construction sites – sometimes under difficult conditions: they had to work very hard in the great heat and received little wages. Many of them even had their passports taken away: they could only leave the country if their bosses allowed them to.
Because the construction sites were also not sufficiently secured, there were many accidents. People have also died in the process.
3. Human rights in Qatar
In the country of the 2022 World Cup, not everyone has equal rights:
If women want to travel, practice certain jobs or marry, they have to ask the men in their family for permission.
Love between people of the same sex, i.e. between gays and lesbians, is forbidden in Qatar.
In addition, the people of Qatar are not always allowed to freely express their opinions.
A lot of people think a World Cup shouldn’t be held in a country where there is so much to criticize. Others hope that the situation in Qatar could even improve as a result of the World Cup – now that people from all over the world have become aware of the problems in the country.
