Ewill Kaili continues to claim her innocence. Greek MEP denies being corrupted by Qatar and says she has ‘no relation to money found in her home’ […] she did not know of the existence of this money”, according to her lawyer Michalis Dimitrakopoulos, who reacted to Agence France-Presse.

He reaffirmed that his client was “innocent” when bags filled with banknotes worth 150,000 euros were discovered in his apartment in Brussels, according to a Belgian judicial source. The lawyer, who spoke on several occasions with Eva Kaili, imprisoned since Sunday in Brussels and stripped of her post as Vice-President of the European Parliament, stressed that “only her companion (the Italian Francesco Giorgi with whom she lived) could provide “answers on the existence of this money”. Francesco Giorgi is one of the three other people imprisoned in this investigation into this scandal which splashes the European authorities and caused a shock wave throughout Europe and in particular in Greece.

The 44-year-old elected socialist is suspected of having been paid by Doha to defend the interests of the emirate which currently hosts the World Cup. Qatar has firmly denied the accusations, but a judicial source confirmed to AFP that this country was well suspected by Belgian investigators. Me Dimitrakopoulos also indicated that “tomorrow (Wednesday)” Eva Kaili would “request her release” from the judicial authorities in Brussels.

“She is not a fugitive or a suspect for any other offense,” added the lawyer, saying he hopes his client will be released on parole. He vehemently dismissed “false rumours” that Eva Kaili had received bribes from Qatar. “She will fight to prove her innocence,” he assured, “and inform her fellow MEPs […] that the link between his name and the alleged corruption on the part of Qatar or any other Gulf country or state is completely unreal,” he stressed.
