Qualcomm does not forget to renew its entry-level and mid-range SoCs, and takes the opportunity to change the name. This is how the Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 and 6 Gen 1 arrive, which should soon be found in our smartphones.

Just in time for the start of the school year, the American founder Qualcomm presented its two new SoCs for the most affordable smartphones. After introducing the 8 Gen 1 and 7 Gen 1 platforms last year, the company continues its momentum with two newcomers, 6 Gen 1 and 4 Gen 1.

The announcement of the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 is not a surprise since at the end of August, its technical sheet completely leaked on Twitter through EvLeaks. Engraving in 4 nm, new 5G modem or wifi 6E, the novelties are present for this new platform which is based in part on the 7 Gen 1 version. The Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 is necessarily the less well off of the two, but still risks offering a good boost to the smartphones that will be equipped with it. It is an engraving in 6 nm which is proposed, where the old generation was satisfied with 8 nm. Qualcomm announces a performance gain of around 15% on the CPU and 10% on the GPU. A modest increase, but which should still do good on the entry level. Support for 108-megapixel photos makes its appearance, as on the 6 Gen 1. On the other hand, the possibility of filming in 4K is absent. The platform prefers to focus on 1080p at 60 fps. The screen resolution supported is FH+ or HD+, which we generally find on entry-level and mid-range phones.

On the connection, the new SoC embeds a 5G X51 modem (with download speeds of up to 2.5 Gb/s) and supports wifi 5 (802.11ac, 802.11a/b/g/n) as well as Bluetooth 5.2. Too bad Qualcomm did not see fit to offer wifi 6 to its processor. Like the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1, this 4 Gen 1 offers QuickCharge 4+ for optimized and faster charging.

The availability of the Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 should not delay any longer, since it has been indicated that the chip should be found in certain smartphones coming out at the end of the year. For the 6 Gen 1 platform, it will be necessary to wait until 2023. Motorola has already indicated that it will use the chip in its G range, without giving further details.
