Qualcomm and Samsung signed a landmark agreement yesterday, Thursday, July 28, 2022. It envisions Samsung making greater use of Qualcomm Snapdragon chips in its Galaxy products, whether smartphones, PCs or extended reality devices. The press release, however, left the scope of such an agreement unclear.

Today, Samsung already uses Snapdragon chips in some of its products. Will this new agreement really change the situation? The Qualcomm boss took the floor to clarify things.

100% of Galaxy S23 will have a Snapdragon?

In a question and answer session with investors, Cristiano Amon, the boss of Qualcomm, recalled that 75% of Samsung Galaxy S22 smartphones integrate a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip and not an Exynos chip today. Going forward, he explains that “you should think we’re going to be much better than this on the Galaxy S23 and beyond“.

Being better than 75% with the Galaxy S23 leaves little room for anything other than hitting 100%. You should know that developing a Galaxy S capable of managing two different chips, especially at the software level, represents a cost for Samsung. If the proportion of Snapdragon chips reaches 80-90%, it is difficult to imagine the interest for Samsung to keep an Exynos version in the catalog. This remains a possibility that Cristiano Amon leaves open in his statement.

In this case, we can imagine that Samsung would keep the Exynos version for only a few territories like South Korea. In any case, France should have the Snapdragon version of the future Galaxy S23.

And the Galaxy Books

For Cristiano Amon, however, the important thing is in extending the agreement until 2030 between Qualcomm and Samsung on the other product families.

It therefore extends beyond Galaxy smartphones to include Galaxy Books, Windows PCs, Galaxy tablets, future extended reality devices and other devices. It is therefore a very important agreement, which generates a lot of enthusiasm and which brings the two companies closer together.

On the Samsung side, it is explained that this is not an end of the race for the Exynos chips. The firm still has great ambitions for its own chips.
