Qualcomm hard at work on the Snapdragon 8 Gen2, it should improve support for Netflix and YouTube

While MediaTek, Broadcom and Samsung already manage the AV1 video codec
on their SoCs, Qualcomm is a latecomer on the subject.

That could change with its next flagship. The Snapdragon 8 Gen2 should indeed improve the support of the video streaming platforms of the future smartphones that it will equip.

The AV1 codec would arrive with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2

Faced with the explosion of uses of video streaming, which consumes a lot of bandwidth, the AV1 codec is increasingly popular with major platforms such as Netflix, YouTube and others. However, this new industry trending format is still in the adoption phase and several SoCs still do not support it. This is the case of Qualcomm, which intends to correct the situation with its next processor.

The website Protocol has indeed gleaned information around the use of this codec in the industry and claims that Qualcomm will adopt AV1 for its next chip, probably the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, whose code name would also be “sm8550” . However, we will have to wait until 2023 before we see this new flagship arrive on our mobiles. The integration of AV1 should improve support for Netflix and other video streaming platforms on future generations of smartphones.
