Expected at the end of the year, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will equip high-end smartphones in 2024. However, we learn that the next SoC from Qualcomm would be a little too expensive for some manufacturers.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 might be too expensive for its own good. At least that’s what is rumored on the Chinese social network Weibo, where leaker DigitalChatStation reports that Qualcomm’s future chip would be too expensive for some smartphone brands. The latter would then be ready to use competing SoCs for their high-end smartphones in 2024 (such as the Dimensity models from Taiwanese MediaTek), or even to keep the current Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip… even if it means lag behind technologically.
Qualcomm too greedy?
” The cost of Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 seems to be a bit high, and some manufacturers are ready to go [d’autres puces] like the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, or those attached to the Dimensity platform “, explains DigitalChatStation, adding that this decision would however concern “ standard version of the flagships of certain brands, and that it would be taken in such a way as to reduce costs and increase performance of these models.
We understand by this that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 would therefore be preferred for the most expensive versions of high-end smartphones of 2024 (the “Plus”, “Pro” or “Ultra” versions for example…), while the versions one few more affordable would feature less reputable, or at least slightly more dated chips.
A situation not really unprecedented…
Note that this approach would be far from being a first on the market. In recent years, several smartphone brands have already engaged in this type of arbitration. Among them, Oppo and Vivo.
The two Chinese companies already offer models equipped with different processors within a single line of devices. Their “standard” flagships are then equipped with older generation Snapdragon chips or MediaTek Dimensity SoCs, while their “Pro” versions benefit from the latest chips from Qualcomm.
According to DigitalChatStation, the price of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 would however be high enough to push more manufacturers to adopt this kind of practice on their future high-end models. A situation that could benefit MediaTek.
