There’s something in the air when it comes to smartwatch chips. Qualcomm finally seems ready to compete with Samsung on processors for the latter. The company has indeed teased its next chip for this category of products with a fairly explicit message “ Something big is happening”.

This message suggests something new from Qualcomm, which could finally offer a SoC up to current performance for watches under Wear OS.

AccordingWinFuturethe brand could soon offer two new chips for connected objects to wear with a Snapdragon Wear 5100 and a Snapdragon Wear 5100+.

A return to the front of the stage for Qualcomm?

These new platforms would be produced with 4 nm engraving, which would give them a real power gain. In comparison, Samsung’s Exynos W920, currently used by the Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic, benefits from 5 nm engraving when Apple’s latest S7 chip produced by TSMC was engraved at 7 nm. .

These new chips could eventually offer better performance, but also better autonomy. The Android connected watch market would then offer itself a potential rise in power.

This boost in performance would also go hand in hand with the better integration of Wear OS that Android devices (smartphones, tablets, Chromebooks) have been entitled to recently thanks to the partnership between Google and Samsung on Wear OS 3.
