Qualcomm’s next mid-range chip would be a racing beast

The specs of the potential Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 hint at a chip that, give or take a thing or two, wouldn’t have much to envy the mighty Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

Rather prominent on Chinese forums, the leaker Digital Chat Station shared information about Qualcomm’s upcoming mid-range SoC on Weibo. The one that could soon bear the name of Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, according to the new “simplified” nomenclature of the American group, would have quite honorable firepower, enough even to place it two steps behind the all-powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, launched at the end of last year on the top of the range.

We learn in particular that this new octacore chip would bring together four high-performance Cortex-A710 cores clocked at 2.36 GHz and four high-efficiency Cortex-A510 cores whose frequency would this time be limited to 1.80 GHz. There would also be an Andreno 662 GPU part and the whole would be engraved according to TSMC’s 4 nm process, relays XDA Developers.

Towards a very muscular mid-range?

Recall that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 has a fairly similar CPU configuration, with Cortex-A710 and Cortex-A510 cores, to which are however added even faster Cortex-X2 cores. Finally, there is an Adreno 730 graphics part, which is also more powerful.

Clearly, the potential Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 would not be as capable as its big brother on intensive tasks and would also fall slightly behind on 3D performance. In this area in particular, Qualcomm’s new mid-range chip could actually develop a power level similar to the Snapdragon 888, which would still be quite flattering. As a reminder, the latter embarked an iGPU Adreno 660 already capable of very beautiful things, especially with players.

Note that at this time, nothing allows us to be certain that Qualcomm will indeed adopt the nickname of Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 for its next mid-range chip. Whatever its name, the latter would in any case develop an advantageous level of performance; enough to give even more appeal to smartphones sold at reasonable prices. It remains to be seen whether the information that has reached us will be verified in the coming months or not.
