Queen Elizabeth was unable to attend the Remembrance Sunday memorial service on Sunday, November 14, 2021 due to a back condition. An absolute exception for the monarch.

Queen Elizabeth was 21 years old when she made a promise to the British people: “All my life, be it short or long, I will put in your service.” Words that the monarch takes very seriously to this day and that, even at the proud age of 95, only relinquishes her obligations to members of the royal family in an emergency.

The Queen had to “reluctantly” cancel a trip to Northern Ireland in October. On Sunday, the monarch had back problems so that she could not attend Remembrance Sunday as planned. There haven’t been many moments like this in the past 69 years …

Queen Elizabeth: She had to cancel the events due to colds and operations

1993: The flu thwarted the Queen’s plans

Commonwealth Day in March is one of the most significant holidays for the Royals. It is virtually impossible for Queen Elizabeth to miss this event. In 1993, however, the queen had to withdraw: a flu made participation almost impossible.

The Queen was absent from the annual Christmas service in 2016

Also in 2016, Queen Elizabeth had to cancel an appointment that is very close to her heart. The monarch was unable to attend the Christmas service in Sandringham due to a severe cold. Prince Philip, † 99, also had to stay in bed at the time. The then 90-year-old “continues to recover from a severe cold and will stay at home to support her recovery,” was the palace’s official statement.

Monarch missed the 200th anniversary of the Order of St. Michael and St. George in 2018

Two years later, the British sovereign was again struggling with cold symptoms. An announced visit to St. Paul’s Cathedral in London had to be canceled. “The Queen is not feeling well today and has decided not to attend the service in St. Paul’s Cathedral on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Order of St. Michael and St. George,” said a spokesman for the palace. It was then that the Duke of Kent, 86, assumed the position of Queen.

Cold in 2020 dropped annual appointment in the water

In January 2020, as every year, Queen Elizabeth was expected at the “Women’s Institute” event in Norfolk. Unfortunately, the monarch was unable to keep this appointment due to the symptoms of colds. A big disappointment for herself: the Queen – at that time still Princess Elizabeth – has been attending the meeting since 1943.

Palace cancels the Queen’s trip to Northern Ireland

In 2021, the mother of Prince Charles, 73, will have to spend a night in the hospital for the first time in eight years. On the advice of the doctors, the Queen then withdraws in order to be able to fully recover. As a result, her planned trip to Northern Ireland has to be canceled. Their participation in the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow is also prohibited.

Several appointments fail due to a hospital stay in 2013

In 2013, it wasn’t a cold that caused the Queen to miss appointments. A hospital stay for the then 86-year-old caused doctors and employees of the monarch to relieve her of all obligations for a week. Including a two-day trip to Rome that Queen Elizabeth wanted to take. The reason for her visit to the hospital was gastroenteritis, a gastrointestinal infection.

A few days earlier, the greeting mother of Prince William, 39, had to cancel her participation in the Welsh national holiday, St. David’s Day, in Swansea. In March 2013, the Queen also stayed away from the Commonewalth Day service – for the first time in 20 years.

Queen Elizabeth canceled these appointments due to back pain:

  • 2006: The queen struggled with sciatica for several weeks
  • October 2012: A one-hour medal ceremony for the Queen is given to Prince Charles because of pain in his back. “The ceremony is quite exhausting,” said Buckingham Palace
  • November 2013: Queen Elizabeth cancels her participation in the award ceremony at Windsor Castle due to ailments in her back
  • November 2021: The monarch cannot take part in Remembrance Sunday as announced

Queen Elizabeth: 2021 will be the seventh time she will not be able to attend Remembrance Sunday

The Queen’s cancellation of the memorial service at the cenotaph has never happened before. The 95-year-old did not appear at the annual event only six times in her reign. She stayed away twice because of her pregnancy. The other four missed participation can be explained by the monarch’s stays abroad.

Over the years, the queen underwent a number of operations, including a cataract operation in 2018. At that time, she still took part in events – but wore sunglasses. Even when the monarch broke an arm in a riding accident in 1994, she insisted on fulfilling her obligations.
