Queen Elizabeth II: her first public appearance since the pandemic began

Queen Elizabeth II had her first public appointment outside of a royal residence since the beginning of the Corona crisis.

Although Queen Elizabeth II (94) spent the traditional summer vacation together with Prince Philip (99) in Balmoral, Scotland, and then spent a few days in Sandringham, she has otherwise stayed at Windsor Castle during the Corona crisis – largely isolated from the world to avoid infection in their old age as much as possible. Now, for the first time, the monarch has attended a public appointment outside of a royal residence.

With Prince William at Porton Down

Together with her grandson Prince William (38), who is second to the British throne behind Prince Charles (71), the Queen traveled to Porton Down near Salisbury on Thursday (October 15, 2020). There she opened the new Energetics Analysis Center together with her grandson. It is a state-of-the-art center where scientists and analysts conduct research to protect the UK from terrorist and criminal attacks involving explosives, as the royals explain on Twitter. The facility is part of the Defense Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl).

The Queen and the Prince also met on site with individual scientists from the facility who are currently helping in the fight against Covid-19. They also attended a presentation, among other things and met members of the military, as well as anti-terrorism and security personnel.
