Since King Frederik, 55, was proclaimed monarch on January 14, 2024, he has already made several brilliant appearances with Queen Mary, 51. At the proclamation, the whole of Denmark was happy for the new royal couple; the touching balcony appearance with their four children moved not only the regent. Since then, the royals seem to be more popular than ever. Now her immense popularity could be hit a little bit – due to a cancellation of a date.

King Frederik and Queen Mary cancel their trip to Bornholm

The palace recently confirmed that Frederik and Mary will be embarking on their first trip abroad as a royal couple: it will be to Sweden, although exactly when is not yet known. However, the two of them are now refraining from visiting a region in their own country. As “TV2” reports, the royal family made an agreement with the Bornholm regional municipality for a royal visit before Queen Margrethe, 83, abdicated. But now the cancellation follows.

Jacob Trøst, 51, mayor of the Danish Baltic Sea island, announced this at a local council meeting on Thursday evening, January 25, 2024. The politician received a letter from the palace. “It is not yet clear when the new royal couple will visit Bornholm,” says Trøst resignedly. It is not the first time that the residents of Bornholm have had to cope with a royal disappointment. In the summer of 2023, Queen Margrethe was supposed to dock the royal ship “Dannebrog” off the island on Sweden’s southern coast, but this was canceled due to health problems. In June, the then monarch showed up when she surprisingly took part in a flag-raising ceremony at the Danish Civil Protection Authority in the Bornholm town of Rønne. So there is still a little hope. Perhaps Frederik will imitate his mother and unexpectedly honor the community over the course of the year.
