Queen Letizia of Spain chaired and presented the awards at the closing event of the 14th call for the social project “Euros from your payslip” at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid on September 27, 2022. She experienced a touching moment that went to her heart.

Twelve social projects, some of which Queen Letizia, 50, has been following for a long time, were recognized during the closing event of “Euros from your payslip” and received a total of 537,114 euros for the development of their work. This form of reward for incredible commitment is financed thanks to donations from business customers of a Spanish bank. Maruja had also been invited to the appointment. The elderly woman lives completely alone and has received a new meaning in life through the award winners of the Grandes Amigos en Acción (in English: Big Friends in Action) foundation, as the daily newspaper “ABC” reports. The foundation focuses on accompanying lonely elderly people. Maruja showed her gratitude with a small eulogy, which she concluded with the heartbreaking words: “Thank you to everyone who enables older people to feel better accompanied and loved.”

Queen Letizia: Breaking the rules is a matter of the heart

King Felipe’s wife, 54, was clearly impressed by Maruja’s story. So much so that when the 91-year-old asked her politely, “Letizia, would you hug me?” she reacted immediately. The Royal immediately got up from the front row, walked towards the old lady and thus promptly “broke” protocol.

Both women hugged each other deeply. A picture that caused goosebumps. The audience applauded loudly. “But do not cry!” the touched king could be heard whispering to the moved Maruja, who then replied, according to the daily newspaper “El Mundo”: “No, I won’t cry. But I congratulate you on everything you do and for all the help you provide.”

Letizia appeals to compassion and helpfulness

In her short speech, Letizia, still moved by the delightful experience, expressed her gratitude for the excellent initiatives, such as “Hola!” documented, and stated: “Thank you, thank you for inviting me back to this meeting where we have many reasons, at least for a little while this morning, to look at the bright side of life. I don’t know what’s happening to you but I’ll definitely go home with a different energy and a different feeling, a feeling that things can get better and that it’s worth thinking about others, and that’s what it’s all about: to see what happening around us and to start looking at our surroundings and asking ourselves how we can improve the lives of people in need.”
