In 2023, Queen Margrethe managed to break a record that not everyone will like: As a Danish magazine has now published, the ex-monarch was anything but on the back burner in the last year of her reign.

Money alone may not make you happy, but having enough of it can relieve a lot of worries. If anything goes, Queen Margrethe, 83, may have led a relatively carefree life last year: In the last year of her 52-year reign, Her Royal Majesty’s expenses exploded “to an unprecedented extent,” according to the Danish magazine ” Se og Hør” now revealed. Queen Margrethe spent 169,916.19 Danish crowns per day – the equivalent of around 22,793 euros.

Queen Margrethe made an “insane increase” in 2023

The Danish magazine had insight into the royal family’s VAT refunds from the past calendar year. According to “Se og Hør”, these documents show that Queen Margrethe spent exactly 62,019,412.70 Danish crowns “on goods and services subject to VAT” in the entire year 2023. This corresponds to an amount of around 8.3 million euros – and a more than sporting daily rate, which the ex-monarch literally squandered. Please note: This impressive sum does not include expenses for the salaries of their employees, but only those on which VAT is levied.

This amount alone amounts to an expensive record, as the Danish paper has further calculated. There they judge Queen Margrethe’s spending mood as “an insane increase compared to 2022”. Even then, the Queen broke “all records” when she spent around 46.5 million Danish crowns. In 2021 this amount was around 36.8 million, in 2020 it was around 27.4 million. Especially in the last years of her reign, Queen Margrethe probably didn’t want to be left out!

Court provides explanation for the Queen’s horrendous expenses

The Danish court would not want to leave such a record sum uncommented. The palace’s chief financial officer, Dan Folke Pedersen, is looking for explanations to “Se og Hør”. And makes it clear: “The increase in spending in 2023 is due to the major renovation work that Queen Margrethe is carrying out at Marselisborg Castle in these years.”

Does the financial culprit have four walls and a roof? In 2022, Queen Margrethe’s 82nd birthday was celebrated at Marselisborg Castle in Aarhus.

However, it is not explained why the 83-year-old became more and more generous in the previous years. For fun, “Se og Hør” calculated what gross annual income Queen Margrethe would have needed if she had been a normal taxpayer – and it comes to an impressive 127 million Danish crowns, around 17 million euros.
