Queen Margrethe, 84, will travel to Sweden for the first time since she resigned as monarch of Denmark. There is no official appointment behind the visit to the neighboring country, but rather a private reason. Together with Princess Benedikte, 80, she wants to visit Sofiero Palace. A royal residence that the sisters associate with memories of their mother.

Queen Margrethe + Princess Benedikte: They visit Sofiero Palace

Sofiero Castle is located about five kilometers from the Swedish city of Helsingborg. The residence has been extensively renovated over the past three years. Margrethe and Benedikte are now attending the opening ceremony to inspect the new features. As “Svens Damtidning” reports, the royals have been invited to lunch. They will also have the opportunity to take a drive through the castle park. The sisters’ stay is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Although the castle served as the summer residence of the Swedish royal family for many years, the Danish royals also have personal connections with this place. After all, Margrethe’s mother, Queen Ingrid, †90, was a native Swede and the daughter of King Gustav VI, †90. The former queen spent every summer holiday at Sofiero Castle during her childhood and youth. The property is therefore likely to evoke sentimental feelings in her daughters as well.

Queen Margrethe: Her grandmother made the palace gardens bloom

The castle is often celebrated by travel guides for its impressive and unique garden. More than 5,000 unique rhododendron bushes adorn the castle park and offer an unforgettable impression in spring and summer. Queen Margrethe and Princess Benedikte’s grandmother was largely responsible for this design. Crown Princess Margaret of Sweden, †38, was considered a passionate gardener and is said to have given the garden the shape it has retained to this day.
