Fans will have to wait to discover Quentin Tarantino’s tenth (and final announced film). The American director has indeed just abandoned his project The Movie Criticwhile he had already completed his main roles, and was due to begin filming at the end of the year.
A “change of mind”
According to our colleagues at Deadline. However, the preparation of the film was off to a good start, with a script completed, Brad Pitt chosen in the lead role and several of the filmmaker’s regular actors announced to return, Sony in production and filming planned for fall 2024. But “QT” in decided otherwise.
According to the webzine’s sources, the director of pulp Fiction And Django Unchained would have simply “changed his mind”, after having gone into a total rewrite which had already considerably postponed the production of the film.
In a final twist, Tarantino would have simply decided that The Movie Critic was not up to the standard to be his tenth and final feature film (Kill Bill: Volume 1 And Kill Bill: Volume 2 counting as one film). The filmmaker would already have returned to his typewriter to launch another project.
If the film was still shrouded in mysteries, we do know that it was to take place in California in 1977, and that it was to tell the story of a man writing film reviews for a pornographic magazine. The story is inspired by Tarantino’s teenage years, a time when he discovered surprisingly interesting film reviews in the pages of a porn magazine.
This is not the first time that the filmmaker has canceled a project. He had already done it at the time of Eight Bastards, when a first version of the script was leaked on the Internet. He reversed his decision after multiple positive feedback, and the film was finally released in 2015. Will this be the case for The Movie Critic ? Nothing is less sure.
As a reminder, Tarantino has long announced that he would only sign ten films before ending his career as a director to devote himself in particular to writing. We still have to find the right project to end one of the most beautiful filmographies of American cinema in style. So to be continued.
