Questionnaire on the “Partygate” affair
Police want answers from Boris Johnson

Because of alleged lockdown parties in Downing Street, the police want to question more than 50 alleged participants. Among them is Boris Johnson. A government spokesman assured that the prime minister would provide information as requested.

London Police investigations into the Downing Street lockdown party scandal have reached British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. The 57-year-old received a questionnaire from the Metropolitan Police, a government spokesman said on the evening of the BBC. Johnson will answer the questions as requested.

The police had announced that they would send questions about the events to around 50 people who are believed to have taken part in the twelve events in question at the government headquarters. At the time of the events in May, June, November and December 2020 as well as in January and April 2021, strict distance rules applied due to the corona pandemic; Members of several households were not allowed to meet in closed rooms. The participants – including Johnson – face fines.

Johnson denies the party allegations. He emphasizes that he neither took part in illegal events nor that corona rules were broken. According to him, it was a work meeting. The prime minister has so far dodged the question of whether he would resign if fined.

Johnson is under a lot of pressure because of the affair. But not only the opposition, but also several members of his Conservative Party are calling for his resignation. On Wednesday, businessman John Armitage, who has donated a total of £3m to the Tories, joined that group. Political leaders should resign when they have lost their moral authority, Armitage said in a television interview.
