Quiz: if you recognize all these invisible actors, you have superpowers

Like the Invisible Man in the films of the same name, we have made these actors and actresses disappear. Can you recognize them all? – Co-written with Ando Raminoson

Born in 1897 in the homonymous novel by HG Wells, the Invisible Man has often delighted the small and big screen, with around twenty feature films featuring the character (with more or less fidelity to the original material ), and five series, the latest from the early 2000s.

But why should the troubled character created by the novelist, and who was a marker of the evolution of special effects, be the only one to be able to benefit from these powers? So we’ve made ten actors and actresses invisible, and now it’s up to you to recognize them.

If the adaptations of “The Invisible Man” began in 1909, it was that of 1933 signed James Whale (already author of Frankenstein two years earlier) which was the first to mark the spirits. But not the last, with some unexpected cross-overs. As when the character confronts the comedians Abbott and Costello, very little known in France, the Gestapo, or becomes one with Dr. Mabuse, made famous by the films of Fritz Lang.

While it was the subject of three series between 1975 and 1984, The Invisible Man was at the heart of two significant adaptations at the end of the 20th century: that of John Carpenter, a fantastic comedy worn by Chevy Chase (Bonjour les vacances, Three Amigos, Community…), at the origin of the project; and that of Paul Verhoeven, Hollow Man, released in 2000 and which highlights the darkness of the main character, played by Kevin Bacon and who gives in to his lowest instincts once transformed.

Even more recently, it was Leigh Whannell, co-screenwriter of Saw, who brought the myth up to date, with a fantastic thriller against a backdrop of domestic violence. The invisibility of the character, a rich and brilliant scientist who has faked his death, thus illustrates the trauma of the heroine (Elisabeth Moss), haunted by a painful past and a presence that she thinks she feels. With a budget of $7 million, Invisible Man grossed 143 worldwide in early 2022, just before the pandemic hit theaters.
