The Little Mermaid may be the Disney classic with the most bubbles, but did you know that the film also marks the debut of a notable studio songwriting duo?

Critically acclaimed in 1986 for the musical The Little Shop of Horrors on Broadway, Howard Ashman and Alan Menken are contacted by the House of Mickey to make The Little Mermaid a great musical film for children.

As soon as they arrive, they ask the creative team in person to retouch the scenario by trying to make a happy ending (contrary to the initial tale) and to breathe the spirit of a real musical into the cartoon. but unlike the other films; is that the animation and the songs become one with the characters.

Seduced by the idea, John Musker and Ron Clements named not only Howard Ashman and Alan Menken songwriters but also executive producers of the film. After the release of the film, they will be awarded 2 Oscars (the first since 1971 for Disney) and will continue to work with Mickey’s studios.
