Race in Australia canceled
Formula 1 has to reschedule again

The ongoing Corona crisis is forcing Formula 1 to rebuild the racing calendar: The Australian Grand Prix, which has already been postponed towards the end of the year, cannot take place this year either. A decision as to where to drive instead should be announced quickly.

The Formula 1 race in Melbourne, which was initially postponed from March to November due to the corona pandemic, has been finally canceled. The organizers announced this on Tuesday. The Australian Grand Prix, which was canceled at short notice last year, could not take place in 2021 due to the strict quarantine restrictions and the resulting logistical challenges, according to a press conference.

“While it is disappointing that we cannot drive in Australia this season, we are confident that we can still carry out the 23 races planned for 2021,” said Formula 1 boss Stefano Domenicali in a press release. Formula 1 has “a number of options” to replace the Grand Prix, which was supposed to take place in the metropolis on November 21. In “the coming weeks” a solution should be presented, it said.

During the corona pandemic, the race in Australia, which under normal circumstances always marked the start of the season, is already the third Grand Prix that cannot be held this year. Previously, the World Cup races in Montreal, Canada, and Singapore were canceled due to corona restrictions. A second race in Austria was added to the calendar, and a stop in Istanbul is planned for October. This also had to be postponed due to the high corona numbers. The planned motorcycle Grand Prix race in Australia also had to be canceled. The event was scheduled for October 22nd to 24th on Phillip Island and could not take place in 2020.
