Rachel Levine, 63, is the US Deputy Secretary of Health – and was sworn in as the first four-star transsexual officer in the country’s history.
Levine, who was appointed by President Joe Biden, 78, is already the highest-ranking openly transsexual officer in the United States. Four-star generals hold the highest officer rank of the rank group of generals.
“Historic” and “significant” appointments
In her swearing-in speech on Tuesday, she described the occasion as “significant” and “historic”.
The general went on to say, “May this appointment today be the first of many to come as we create a diverse and more inclusive future.” In her speech, she also paid tribute to other LGBTQ people who came before her.
Rachel Levine was born Richard Levine in the small town of Wakefield, Massachusetts. She is a graduate of Harvard University and Tulane University School of Medicine and previously worked as a pediatrician.
Levine wants active leadership – no symbolism
The so-called US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, which she now attends, has around 6,000 uniformed officers. They are entrusted with managing health crises such as the coronavirus pandemic and natural disasters.
In an interview, Levine emphasized, according to the Washington Postthat her new position as admiral is “not just symbolic” and that she will take a leadership role in shaping public health priorities.
“The historic appointment of Admiral Levine as the first openly transsexual four-star officer is a big step towards equality in our nation,” said Health Minister Xavier Becerra (63) in a statement. (euc)
