A Facebook group of police members contains numerous hate speeches that are racist, sexist and homophobic. An investigation has been opened.

Christophe Castaner, Minister of the Interior, seized the Paris public prosecutor's office after the publication of an investigation by Street Press, dedicated to a Facebook group of some 7,760 police and gendarme. The prosecution opened a preliminary investigation for "public insult of a racist nature" and "provocation to racial hatred", reports AFP, at a time when the demonstration against police and racist violence is raging around the world following the death of George Floyd.

Screenshots from this Facebook group called "TN Rabiot Police Officiel" shared by Street Press reveal numerous hateful, racist, sexist and homophobic messages published by the police, and a few gendarmes. Insults against Camélia Jordana, who denounces police violence, the death of young men on motorbikes mocked, insults to undocumented migrants, Islamophobic remarks … The list goes on and on, it makes you nauseous. "If they are proven, these unacceptable remarks are likely to seriously damage the honor of the national police and gendarmerie", commented the entourage of Christophe Castaner who, on Wednesday, promised a "sanction" for "every fault, every excess, every word, including racist expressions" from the police and gendarmes.

In addition to the referral to Christophe Castaner, the anti-racist association La Maison des Potes has announced that it will file a complaint against X, denouncing the fact that "racism is an evil that is eating away at the police more and more". For its part, Youcef Brakni, member of the Justice and Truth committee for Adama Traoré, believes that the investigation by Street Press updates the sentiment "of impunity" to the police. Contacted by AFP, Facebook says to investigate "actively on this group", and certifies that it will delete the contents contrary to its rules, that is to say the "hate speech" and those who incite violence.
