Origin of radish
Radish is a popular food in Asia, but here it is mainly known in southern Germany and is often served there as a snack. The plant probably originally came from Egypt and then spread across the Mediterranean. In this country, radish is mainly grown in Bavaria.
These radish varieties exist
There are three different types of radish, but it is a food primarily the garden radish of importance. It is divided into different varieties, of which the white radish is best known. But there are also pink, red, purple, brown and black radishes. Besides their color they differ in taste and in the growing timeHowever, the pulp under the skin is white in all varieties. Radishes are also a variety of the garden radish, but horseradish is not closely related to it.
Radish: season and availability
- The round one May radish is, as the name suggests, available from May to July. Its color is white and it has a mild taste.
- The season of the Summer radish lasts from July to September. It tastes a little hotter, is elongated and can have a white, red or brown skin.
- Winter radish is harvested from October and is available in stores until February, as it can be stored well. It is usually black, but it can also be purple or brown in color. Winter radish is available in round and elongated forms, it tastes much hotter than summer radish.
Prepare radish: that's how it works
Be white and red radish often eaten raw, for example in a salad or as a sandwich. You should peel the root beforehand, then you can cut it up in a spiral, slice or grate it. Because of its sharpness, it is advisable to cook black radish to soften its taste a little.
