Rail travel should become safer: Habeck and Lauterbach for 3G in trains

Already in summer there are considerations to allow only vaccinated, convalescent and tested people in long-distance rail transport. “Not practically feasible,” find the ministries involved and the idea is off the table. Now the corresponding demands are getting louder again.

Because of the acute corona situation, politicians are now calling for the 3G rule to be applied in train traffic. Travelers would then have to be vaccinated, recovered or tested. “Yes, train travel must also be safer. From my point of view, 3G should apply here, we will have to talk about it,” said Greens boss Robert Habeck to the newspapers of the Funke media group.

The SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach also speaks out in favor. “3G should also apply in trains. In this corona situation, it is irresponsible that people, unvaccinated and untested, sit closely next to other passengers for hours in long-distance traffic,” Lauterbach told “Bild am Sonntag”. In August, the ministries of transport, health and the interior ministries described considerations about the introduction of the 3G rule in long-distance traffic in a joint paper as “impracticable”. Control is only possible “to a very limited extent”. After several weeks of examination, the federal government finally rejected the plans.

Compulsory vaccination and regional lockdowns

Habeck also considers restrictions on freedom for unvaccinated people to be possible. “Contact restrictions are painful cuts, we all know that too well. But in view of the dramatic situation, they may be necessary regionally for people who are not ingested. The same should be included in the Infection Protection Act.” He also considers compulsory vaccination for certain professional groups to be useful.

Strict 2G rules for vaccinated and convalescent are necessary by the federal states, Habeck emphasized. Compliance must also be consistently monitored. “The increase in security to 2G plus, ie the testing of vaccinated people, is the next logical step as soon as the test centers open again across the board,” added the Greens boss. 3G measures at the workplace and increased use of the home office are also urgently required.

“The situation in Germany is extremely dramatic,” said Habeck. “If the fourth wave is not broken quickly, the hospital system threatens to collapse in December,” he warned.
