Railroad closure necessary – ended up in a water catchment basin with a car

A serious traffic accident near a level crossing in Mauthausen in Upper Austria made it necessary to close the ÖBB route on Saturday evening. An elderly couple had landed in a water catchment basin and had to be rescued from the wreck with injuries.

A 75-year-old from Katsdorf was driving her car on Saturday around 7 p.m. with her husband of the same age on the B123 near Mauthausen in the direction of Ried in der Riedmark. Shortly before a level crossing there, the woman lost control of her car for an unknown reason. This left the road on the right, broke through an ÖBB fence and finally came to a standstill in the opposite direction in a water catchment basin.ÖBB emergency coordinator on dutyBecause of the difficulties in recovering the car, the ÖBB emergency coordinator was informed immediately and a railroad closure was arranged. The two car occupants were injured to an undetermined degree and taken to the Kepler University Hospital in Linz after first aid. The Haid and Mauthausen fire brigades were deployed with a total of six vehicles and 37 men. The roadblock was lifted around 7:45 p.m.
