Rain, hail and hurricanes are sweeping across Switzerland

Many places in Switzerland were affected by hail, heavy rain and even hurricane gusts on Sunday. Danger still exists in the south of the country.

In some places a strong wind blew, in Egolzwil in the canton of Lucerne even a hurricane gust was measured at a speed of 133 km/h.

In the course of the afternoon, further thunderstorm lines passed over Switzerland in a north-easterly direction.

The greatest danger for southern Switzerland is towards the late afternoon. There is “danger to life and limb”, wrote SRF Meteo and recommended that the population not leave the house.

Axenstrasse closed due to the risk of falling rocks

In the canton of Uri, the Axenstrasse had to be closed due to heavy rain. As the Canton Police Uri announced that some stones fell into the safety nets above the road. No one was injured, and according to initial findings, there were no injuries.

However, further rockfalls or mudslides cannot be ruled out, the police said. Therefore, the road will remain closed until further notice.

Two injured in Valais

In the canton of Valais, several trees fell down due to the strong winds. Two people were injured on a campsite in Brigerbad, like him Valais messenger writes. The wind tore down several tents at a music festival in the municipality of Lalden and at a junior football tournament in Turtmann.
