One million one-cent coins, artfully shaped into interlocking hands, currently adorn a corner of the right-hand side of the façade of Vienna’s St. Stephen’s Cathedral. The sculpture, with the coins alone weighing 2.3 tons, is intended to “make solidarity action visible” and set a “sign of hope for cohesion and mutual support”, said artist and initiator Julia Bugram.
