Rami Malek: After Freddie Mercury, he becomes the Bond villain

Rami Malek shines as Freddie Mercury in "Bohemian Rhapsody". Next, he'll make life difficult for James Bond as the villain Safin.

Rami Malek (39) won the Oscar for best leading actor for his performance in "Bohemian Rhapsody" (2018). He plays in it no less than Freddie Mercury (1946-1991). The Queen frontman is one of the most important rock singers of the 1970s and 1980s. Malek looks very similar to the musician in the film. The highly acclaimed biopic, which won the most awards at the Oscars in 2019 with four golden boys, will celebrate its free TV premiere in Germany on October 4, 2020 (8:15 p.m., ProSieben). Meanwhile, Malek is waiting for the next prestigious role.

First TV appearance with the "Gilmore Girls"

Rami Malek was born on May 12, 1981 in Los Angeles. Its roots are in Egypt. His father is said to have been a tour guide in Cairo, his mother an accountant. What many do not know: Rami has an identical twin, Sami, who prefers to stay away from the limelight. He should work as a teacher. The sister of the two does not work in show biz either, but a doctor.

Malek finally studied acting in the US state of Indiana and received a bachelor's degree since 2003. He was at school with two not exactly unknown women: Kirsten Dunst (38, "Spider-Man") and Rachel Bilson (39, "O.C., California") attended the same high school. The now 39-year-old first appeared in front of the camera in an episode of the fourth season of the series "Gilmore Girls". He had his first role on the big screen in "Nachts im Museum" (2006).

Career boost through "Mr. Robot"

For a few years Rami Malek played smaller roles in series such as "24" or "The Pacific". All "Twilight" fans will remember him as Benjamin in "Breaking Dawn – Biss zum Ende der Nacht, Teil 2" (2012). The big breakthrough finally followed with the series "Mr. Robot", which is available in Germany on Amazon Prime Video, among others.

From 2015 to 2019, Malek starred in four seasons as IT security specialist Elliot Alderson, who lived isolated from the outside world, suffered from anxiety and had dissociative identity disorder. In 2016 Rami Malek won the Critics' Choice and Emmy Awards for "Best Actor in a Drama Series" for his performance. He has been nominated twice for the Golden Globe and the Screen Actors Guild Awards. The role has shaped his career significantly.

Freddie Mercury gives him an Oscar

In 2017 Malek was seen in the new edition of "Papillon" alongside Charlie Hunnam (40, "Sons of Anarchy"). But it wasn't until he was cast as Freddie Mercury in the Queen biopic "Bohemian Rhapsody" that the vortex really started. Especially after the first film images and the first trailer were published: The similarity between Rami Malek and Freddie Mercury was amazing. The actor won almost all prizes in the award season; in addition to the Oscar, he now also has the Gloden Globe, the BAFTA and the SAG Award at home.

The upcoming film with Malek is also eagerly awaited. In "James Bond 007: No Time to Die", which is due to hit German cinemas on November 12, 2020, he plays the villain Safin, a very prestigious role. And Bond's adversary seems to make Daniel Craig (52) farewell as 007 really difficult.
