Ukrainian Yarmolenko causes goosebumps

The Ukrainian Andriy Yarmolenko provides the goose bumps moment in the Europa League. The West Ham United pro propelled his club into the quarter-finals for the first time with his goal in extra time. There are also Glasgow Rangers and Olympique Lyon as well as Sporting Braga.

Olympique Lyon, West Ham United, Glasgow Rangers and Sporting Braga complete the Europa League quarter-finals. They are the possible opponents for RB Leipzig, Eintracht Frankfurt, Barcelona and Atalanta Bergamo. The pairings will be drawn on Friday at 1.30 p.m. (live ticker on ntv.de).

The record winner of the Europa League is out. So far, FC Sevilla has won the UEFA Cup or the successor competition six times. But in the 2021/2022 season, the Andalusians will not lift the trophy. The trip to the English capital to West Ham United was the last one this year. Ironically, Ukrainian star Andriy Yarmolenko scored in the second half of extra time to decide in favor of the “Hammers”, who had leveled the 0-1 in the first leg in regular time.

Yarmolenko missed two London games after Russia’s attack on his home country and then came back with a goal in the league game against Aston Villa. Coach David Moyes brought him on at half-time against Sevilla and the Ukrainian thanked him for the confidence with a 112th-minute penalty. Last furious attacks by the Andalusians yielded nothing.

Red Star feels provoked

Dortmund conquerors Glasgow Rangers had no trouble at Red Star Belgrade, who continue to play in Gazprom shirts. The Scots suffered a 2-1 defeat, but that didn’t matter after the 3-0 win in the first leg. It got heated after the final whistle. Rangers pro Connor Goldson celebrated with the rest of his squad a place in the quarter-finals, raising the spirits of Serbs who felt provoked by the Rangers defender. He is said to have cheered too close to the home curve. Led by Belgrade goalkeeper Milan Borjan, a pack formed and referee Istvan Kovacs awarded the keeper a yellow card.

For AS Monaco, however, the round of 16 was the last stop. The team around goalkeeper Alexander Nübel, on loan from Bayern, and former Leverkusen player Kevin Volland only managed to draw 1-1 against Portuguese representative Sporting Braga – not enough after the 0-2 in the first leg. The Monegasques were even chasing a 0-1 lead up to the 90th minute and it was late when Axel Disasi scored a consolation goal. It was different for the second Ligue 1 representative Olympique Lyon. Without Jérôme Boateng, coach Peter Bosz’s team advanced to the next round with a 1-1 (1-1) win against FC Porto. They had won the first leg 1-0 on the Atlantic coast.

Bundesliga side RB Leipzig are also in the quarter-finals, having benefited from the exclusion of their opponent Spartak Moscow. They were thrown out of the competition after Russia attacked Ukraine.
