On May 17, Selma Blair will publish her memoirs. In these, the actress confides with an open heart about her alcoholism and the rapes she suffered.
Selma Blair gives herself to an open heart in Mean Baby. Four years after revealing to suffer from multiple sclerosis, she decided to publish her memoirs in which she discusses her relationship with alcohol and where she reveals that she was raped several times. “The first time I got drunk was a revelation”, she remembers in particular. And to come back to the first time she tasted alcohol: “I was treated throughout to a light that flooded me, filling me with the warmth of God”. At the age of seven, Selma Blair drank until she no longer remembered the evening. But from that moment, she set foot in the gears of alcoholism. “I became an expert alcoholic, able to hide my secret”writes the actress in her memoirs.
His relationship with alcohol worsened in adolescence and early adulthood. In his book, Selma Blair even reveals she was raped on a college trip after a day of binge drinking. “I don’t know if they both raped me. One of them certainly did, she writes. I made myself small and silent and waited for it to be over. I wish I could say that what happened to me that night was an anomaly, but it wasn’t. I was raped several times, because I was too drunk to say, ‘Please. Stop’.” Her sexual assault, Selma Blair had never talked about it except to her therapist. If she decided to free herself today, it is to continue her healing, which began years ago. “I hadn’t realized that aggression was so central to my life. I was so ashamed”she says.
Selma Blair: ‘I wrote this autobiography for my son’
“I’m grateful that I feel safe enough to finally write it. And then I can work on it with a therapist and with other writing, and really take that burden of shame off myself”continued Selma Blair. Since 2016, the actress has not had a drop of alcohol. Now sober, she hopes sharing her journey and the most shocking events of her past will help those living with similar burdens. “I wrote this autobiography for my son…and for people trying to find the deepest hole to crawl into until the pain passes”, added the actress. After very complicated years, she sees a brighter future. “I can’t believe all of this has happened in my life, she concluded, and I’m still here, and I’m fine.”
