RARBG used to be one of the biggest torrent sites in the world, it is no longer operational. It is unknown at this time if a new version based on his ashes will be released in the future.

A hard blow for RARBG visitors, the platform suddenly closed its doors after 15 years of existence. Since 2008, it was originally one of the most trusted sources of torrents and one of the spearheads of illegal downloading in the world.

Why did RARBG close?

In a message, the RARBG team explains the reasons for this sudden stop. The torrent sharing site was not shut down by the authorities, as one might have thought in the first place, but for personal reasons.

We are told that the team has suffered several COVID-related deaths, while other members have been weakened by the virus and some still are. Without naming any country, we also understand that the war in Ukraine had significant effects, with people belonging to RARBG fighting ” on both sides “ of the conflict.

The last argument put forward is inflation and the rise in the price of electricity in data centers in Europe, which make “unbearable daily expenses” and involve massive costs that can no longer be supported.

Can RARBG live again?

A page of illegal peer-to-peer downloading is turning with the end of RARBG and its particularly comprehensive content indexes. TorrentFreak spotted remnants of the platform on GitHub, raising hopes that it will rise from the ashes in the future. But that would require a motivated team with the financial means to take over, which is far from guaranteed.

There are notably magnet links, but it is not recommended to use them without knowing what is hidden behind them. The TorrentParts project allows you to inspect the content of a magnet link and its metadata to ensure its security.

The closure of RARBG should above all fuel the audience of its former competitors.

Best Alternative Torrent Clients to uTorrent

BitTorrent (not to be confused with the software of the same name) is one of the fastest data transfer computer networks, and therefore one of the most popular. Based on the peer-to-peer (P2P) protocol, it involves putting each user to work through a data exchange system. In other words, each time you obtain a file, your computer becomes an independent server and shares the information in turn. Thus, the more a torrent is downloaded, the more servers there are, and the faster the download.
