The Raspberry Foundation today announces the launch of its new Camera Module 3.

Sony 12 megapixel sensor, HDR, autofocus… We tell you everything about this new camera from Raspberry.

Raspberry unveils its new Camera Module 3

It was launched for the first time in 2013, the small Camera Module sensor signed Raspberry is back ten years later, for a third generation inevitably very awaited. As for the second generation in 2016, Raspberry has teamed up with Sony for the sensor, with here a 12-megapixel IMX708 module (against an 8-megapixel IMX219 for the Camera Module 2).

To design this brand new camera, Raspberry promises to have taken into consideration the complaints of its users, particularly in terms of autofocus. In addition, the evolution of the sensors allows this Camera Module 3 to be HDR compatible and obviously to offer better quality images.

Up resolution, HDR and FOV

Thus, exit the images in 3,280 x 2,464 pixels, and make way for new captures in 4,608 x 2,592 pixels with this new Camera Module 3. In standard version, the camera signed Raspberry offers a horizontal FoV of 66°. The wide-angle versions, for their part, can climb up to 102°.

Added to this is an all-new autofocus, which promises both fast and efficient focusing, so that the capture is optimally focused. Video demonstration below.

And that’s not all ! Raspberry also confirms the support of the precious HDR, the sensor being able to capture several simultaneous exposures with different exposure times, for a rendering as natural as possible. HDR images whose resolution will be lowered, explains Raspberry, to reach a quarter of that of a non-HDR photo.

At the same time, Raspberry announces the availability of a new variant of its High Quality Camera support, which notably eliminates the use of an M12 adapter. The new Raspberry Module 3 camera starts at $25 and is compatible with all Pis with CSI connectors.

The board dimensions and mounting hole positions are the same as the Camera 2 module.
