This Netflix series “did not attract enough audiences to justify an investment” in a new season: “Mindhunter” will therefore not have a season 3.
It’s official: David Fincher has confirmed that a third season of Mindhunter will not happen. After its first season in 2017, the acclaimed thriller series released its second season in August 2019. Since then, fans have expressed their wish for a third installment.
Mindhunter follows two FBI agents (played by Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany) and a psychologist (Anna Torv) who launch a research project to profile serial killers in order to better understand them.
In an interview with Journal du Dimanche, the director David Fincher returned to its series and gave fans a disappointing update on season 3.
“I’m very proud of the first two seasons. But it’s a very expensive series and, in Netflix’s eyes, we haven’t attracted enough of an audience to justify such an investment. [pour la saison 3]”, he said.
The series actually requires significant post-production work: the show takes place in the 80s, so the sets have to be reworked to make the whole thing authentic. And that comes at a cost.
But the Twin Peaks filmmaker made it clear he doesn’t blame the streaming giant.
“I don’t blame them, they took risks to launch the series, gave me the means to do as I dreamed Mank [son film en noir et blanc sur le Hollywood des années 1930] and they allowed me to venture onto new paths with The Killer [son long métrage de 2023]”, he continued. “It’s a blessing to be able to work with people capable of daring. The day our desires are no longer the same, we will have to be honest to part ways.”
The news comes as no surprise, however, following an announcement in early 2020 that the series had been “suspended for an indefinite period” with lead actors Groff, McCallany and Torv released from their contracts.
In a previous interview with Vulture, Fincher called the production “exhausting and time-consuming” and added that the series was “probably” finished. It is now confirmed.
“When I finished [la saison 2]I was quite exhausted and I said to myself: ‘I don’t know if I have the resources to do a season 3’”, he then explained.
The cancellation of Mindhunteryet rated 4.4 out of 5 by AlloCiné spectators, therefore means that Ford and Tench will not investigate Dennis Rader, also nicknamed BTK (for bind, torture, kill), who appears in watermark in season 2. This serial killer is infamous for having murdered around ten people between 1970 and 1980.
In the same interview, however, a Netflix spokesperson said that even if a third part was not in the works, it could happen “maybe in five years”. We can always hope.
In the meantime, the two (only?) seasons of Mindhunter can be seen exclusively on Netflix.
