Filming on “They Follow,” a sequel to the acclaimed horror film “It Follows,” may not have started yet, but the film’s star, Maika Monroe, is already promising something big: a bigger, darker sequel and more twisted…
An expert at keeping quiet about her upcoming projects, Maika Monroe may not have revealed much about They Follow, the sequel to the acclaimed 2015 horror film, It Follows, but The actress still made some statements to Collider which only seem to promise good things.
During a recent episode of Collider’s “Ladies Night” podcast during which she mainly talked about Longlegs, the upcoming Oz Perkins horror film in which she stars alongside Nicolas Cage, Maika Monroe stated that the filming of They Follow had not yet started and that regarding the return of the actors, “we’d probably know soon enough”.
The actress, however, revealed that the public could expect something new “100%” with the next chapter in the franchise from David Robert Mitchell.
“As you know with the first film, I take no credit for it, David is brilliant. I mean, he’s brilliant. The whole movie transformed in that moment. It was a game changer for the genre, and he would never make a sequel if he didn’t think it would surpass [le premier]. He’s very precise, he refuses so much… He just knows what he wants to do and what he wants to achieve. At first I was like, ‘Oh, a sequel? Where are we going to go?’ And I read it, and it’s so good. It is so good. I’m so excited. I think where you’re going to find Jay at this point might not be what you’d expect, but it’s so cool. Sure, like everyone says about sequels, but it’s literal this time: it’s bigger, darker, and crazier. Reading it was the craziest thing ever.”
Although the actress couldn’t reveal more details about where audiences will find her character when the sequel comes out, she added: “I’m so excited for this role. It’s been a long time since I’ve wanted to immerse myself in something so much. There’s a lot to play with, and I think it’s going to be incredibly difficult, of course, but so rewarding. I can’t wait to work with David.”
A first part that caused a sensation
In It Followswe follow Jay (Maika Monroe), who after consummating her relationship with her boyfriend for the first time wakes up tied up in a wheelchair, in an abandoned building, facing the frightened latter. He then warns her against “one thing”, which will appear in different forms, whether people she knows or a stranger, and which will follow her everywhere with the aim of killing her. To free himself from it, Jay has only one solution: sleep with someone else, who will become a target in his place…

The film debuted at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival before gaining critical acclaim (with a 4.4 out of 5 rating on AlloCiné), who praised it for its originality and acting performances. It Follows was also successful at the box office, having grossed $23.3 million at the worldwide box office, against a budget of $1.3 million. It has since achieved cult status, with many calling it a modern horror classic.
