World Cup run-up falls flat: Nagelsmann is missing half of the starting eleven

Julian Nagelsmann wants to use the upcoming international matches to help his dream team take shape. But nothing comes of it: numerous rejections limit the goals to short-term results, not long-term mechanisms. David Raum is the sixth regular player to cancel.

National coach Julian Nagelsmann will cut half the starting eleven for the upcoming Nations League games after the next loss. David Raum also has to play in the group games this Friday (8.45 p.m./RTL and in the live ticker on ntv.de) in Bosnia-Herzegovina and three days later in Munich against the Netherlands with an ankle injury. The 26-year-old from Leipzig has already left the DFB quarters in Herzogenaurach, as the association announced. Further investigations will take place in Leipzig.

Nagelsmann nominated Robin Gosens from AC Fiorentina to replace Raum, who was most recently the first choice as left full-back. The 30-year-old was last used in the DFB selection in October 2023 in the first two international matches under Nagelsmann during the trip to the USA against the US selection and Mexico. Raum increases the number of absences to six after goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen (patellar tendon tear), Niclas Füllkrug (Achilles tendon irritation), Jamal Musiala (hip joint), Kai Havertz (knee) and Robin Koch (hip).

Nagelsmann has to finally say goodbye to the idea of preparing for the 2026 World Cup in North America. Less than three weeks ago, Nagelsmann said in a good mood that he wanted to “find an eleven now, with five or six top substitutes” who can reach for the fifth star in 2026. Then the new goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen was seriously injured, other regulars were unavailable – and when he returned to Herzogenaurach on Monday, Nagelsmann suddenly looked into the faces of the newcomers Tim Kleindienst, Jamie Leweling and Jonathan Burkardt.

However, the result targets for the two games will not be shaken: “We had to make some changes to the squad at short notice due to a few injuries. But our goals remain,” said the national coach after the meeting of the plucked DFB squad. “We want to win against the Netherlands in Bosnia and Herzegovina and at home in Munich in front of our own fans and defend our lead in the Nations League.”
