BVB follows FC Bayern to the Club World Cup without a fight

Borussia Dortmund still has to solve its task in the Champions League, but can already look forward to some good news: the Bundesliga club can go on a lucrative trip to the USA in the summer of 2025.

Borussia Dortmund has been confirmed as the second participant from the Bundesliga in the “new” Club World Cup in 2025. With league rivals RB Leipzig eliminated in the round of 16 of the Champions League, BVB has secured its ticket. It was already clear that the German record champions Bayern Munich would be taking part in the bloated Club World Cup in the USA (June 15 to July 13, 2025).

Twelve teams from Europe take part in the tournament and are ranked based on their success in the Champions League. In this ranking, BVB is ahead of Leipzig. RB was eliminated on Wednesday after a 1-1 (0-0) draw at Real Madrid. Borussia Dortmund will host PSV Eindhoven next week for the second leg of the round of 16 (first leg: 1-1).

“It was one of Borussia Dortmund’s goals to be in this elite group,” said coach Edin Terzic. “We are pleased that we have qualified. But we will first prepare for the next tasks.” On Saturday (6.30 p.m./Sky and in the live ticker on ntv.de) BVB visits Werder Bremen – and has to fight for important points for Champions League qualification in a long-distance duel with RB Leipzig.

Lots and lots of money awaits

According to the regulations there can be two participants per country. The only possible exception: If three different teams from a league win the Champions League between 2021 and 2024, all three would qualify. This could affect England: FC Chelsea (Champions League winners 2020/21) and Manchester City (2022/23) are already certain to take part. If Arsenal FC wins the title this year, the Gunners would also qualify.

Even if the Club World Cup will not be played until 2025, qualification ends this season. The results of the 2024/25 season will then be included in the ranking for the 2029 tournament. A lot of money is made in the USA: According to the Spanish sports newspaper Mundo Deportivo, there is an entry fee of 50 million euros per participant alone. The winner could earn up to 100 million.
