RDNA 3 performance: RX 7900XTX up to 1.7x faster than RX 6950XT

A quick look at the performance of the new generation RDNA 3 compared to its ancestor RDNA 2.

AMD could not cut it: by presenting its new generation of graphics cards to the public, the company had to talk about performance. The Radeon RX 7900XTX and Radeon 7900XT seem to have some backing, but it is clear that the comparisons lacked spice.

61 TFLOPS of raw power

First, AMD effectively sought to pit the Radeon RX 7900XTX against its former ultra-high-end solution, the RX 6950XT. Surprisingly, it is even ray tracing that has been more clearly highlighted. Thus, of the first six results presented, three were presented with this option activated.

We knew RDNA 2 wasn’t very comfortable performing ray tracing, so it’s nice to see RDNA 3 giving it a serious defeat. However, the largest generational gaps are obtained without ray tracing: up to x1.7 on Cyberpunk 2077 without said option and up to x1.6 on DOOM Eternal with.

To drive the nail on the ray tracing, AMD brought in three other games configured with the details at the maximum in 4K. The gains here are very clear, as you can see above. Going from 39 to 72 FPS on Dying Lights 2 (with FSR), the doubling is not far. Still, we always oppose RX 7900XTX and RX 6950XT.

Without ray tracing, even in 4K, the level of performance is remarkable, and, at this level, AMD rather had fun pointing out how the limits of DisplayPort 1.4 could be reached in terms of fluidity of the animation. This port cannot technically go beyond 240 Hz.

DisplayPort 2.1 and 8K gaming

Be careful however, do not miss the small subtlety of the graph below (like most of the others for that matter). This one does not hesitate to highlight animation speeds greater than 240 FPS in 4K: the FSR has been activated by AMD. It is then less surprising to reach 353 FPS on F1 22and more than 700 on Valorant.

This FSR activation allows AMD to go even further by making the RX 7900XTX a card intended for 8K. Thus, on Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, the firm evokes 96 FPS in 8K, once again well above what DisplayPort 1.4 can provide (60 Hz). So much information that does not, however, give a complete idea of ​​the performance of the RX 7900XTX.

A fortiori, the RX 7900XT is even more mysterious, since its performance is not even mentioned by AMD. The company was probably annoyed not to be able to compare its cards to the GeForce RTX 4080, which is not yet available. Nor could it pit them against the RTX 4090, which does not box in the same category.

On the other hand, these graphs and these performance readings make it possible to underline the interest of being the first card equipped with a DisplayPort 2.1, NVIDIA having decided to remain on the DP 1.4: the game in 8K is in the line of sight of ‘AMD.
